Now use the chorus strumming pattern...you can play it once cleanly if you like, in the bar before the chorus, and then hit the distortion. 

Second verse: clean tone, strum chorus riff 3X. When you get to the part where he sings "Staring at the sea things become so small..." you could use either one of the guitar parts. Either use the riff above, (So many things I"ll never learn...) or just strum Emaj, Bmaj, Amaj, and Bmaj, letting each chord ring for one measure.
